The project involved collaborating with the City of Avondale to develop a design concept and construction plans for enhancing the existing Central Avenue arterial corridor into a complete streets system. This transformation included implementing a road diet to reduce pavement width and allocate space for dedicated on and off-road bike lanes. Additionally, it revitalized the pedestrian experience through upgraded pavements, shading from trees, clear wayfinding signage, and well-placed amenities. These enhancements not only gave the streetscape a distinct character but also fostered safer routes to school for the four schools along the corridor.
Moreover, the project aimed to redefine the streetscape to stimulate economic growth by establishing a vibrant new district within Avondale. It showcased Low Impact Development (LID) principles by incorporating a bio-swale for water retention within the public right-of-way. Furthermore, it demonstrated expertise in designing for various modes of transportation, particularly in a densely developed area, ensuring the creation of safe and separated pathways for cyclists and pedestrians.
Ultimately, the project facilitated the establishment of recreational connections away from the main roadway, encouraging community activity in a historically significant area with concentrated educational and religious institutions.
