The Town of Gila Bend initiated a pedestrian study in 1999 with MAG. This study evolved into a 2009 project to improve the pedestrian amenities along Martin Avenue in the core of Gila Bend. This project linked the Town school with the Heritage and Unity parks by providing wide shaded sidewalk with pedestrian nodes. The project was a “safe routes to schools” project and was funded through HURF funding. The project created a theme for the Town with aesthetic crosswalks, pedestrian comfort nodes that included unique benches, solar bollard lights, and trash receptacles, and native trees for shade. This initial phase set the design precedence for the future character of all the streetscapes within the Town. The concept also promoted a future pedestrian bridge and a core community area with an open space for gathering, celebration, and fun.
